Sharp practices and aggressive customer service
As seasoned Travellers and a member of Avis Preferred we have had good experiences with Avis over the Years The strategic alliance with BA also helps as there are some tangible benefits such as having the second Driver added for free On our latest trip to Malta we pre-booked a Hire Car via BA using Avis It only provided 2 pick up locations one being at the Hilton Hotel located in St Julian s which is 20 minutes from Malta International Airport The rate we got was reasonably good and arrived at the Hotel before the appointed hour to sort everything out The initial greeting we received was just about civil but could tell this was going to be difficult we just didn t expect it to be quite so appalling All our paperwork was in order but we were then hit with the old insurance scam We were effectively told we weren t insured which simply wasn t true It then quickly moved to a quite threatening position whereby we were asked to hand over our credit card to deposit a sum of 1 500 in case anything happened WOW This seemed like a metaphorical punch to the head as when we baulked at this were then told that if we paid 120 we would get comprehensive cover This is of course on top of what we d already committed taking the total cost of hire to an absurd level To put this into perspective the additional insurance would have worked out at 40 a day and for a Ford Fiesta To say the conversation was uncomfortable would be an understatement it was shocking customer service So we cancelled our booking and with BA s assistance got our money back So our travel plans were thrown in the air plus the single Taxi fare back to Valetta was 20 To summarise this was a terrible experience made even worse by some quite aggressive tactics which we didn t expect from Avis

This is the worst ever car rental in the world They keep charging credit cards from people over and over again Although the car was delivered clean and without any damages The staff is incompetent nobody picks up the phone the customer service is disastrous and they steal money from their customers This is the worst car rental in the world

Warning extra charges scam Do not use Avis Malta
Warning Do not use Avis Malta They systematically engage in a scam of making extra charges after you return the car See other Trustpilot reviews in both English and in French The car was one of the oldest most clapped-out and smelly cars I have ever had the misfortune to rent but it worked and didn t break down so that s not why I m angry On my return journey on Thursday 11 Nov I refilled the car with as much petrol as possible just a short distance from the airport I checked the car in and they confirmed that there was nothing more to pay However when I got my next Amex statement I found a charge from Avis dated 15 Nov for 32 03 Euro I tried ringing both Avis and BA through whom the car was booked but neither company were answering their phones I contacted American Express who are always courteous and efficient They agreed to suspend the transaction and investigate Amex have now confirmed details of the charge as 7 03 Euros fuel plus a fee of 25 00 Euros How is this possible since the car was refuelled just before being handed back

Worst experience of my life
I filed a complaint with this company nearly 3 weeks ago and still haven t had a response I am 7 months pregnant and with a 2 year old landed in Malta at 11pm to find that the wrong car was assigned to me A much much smaller car than what was on display on my voucher I showed the company my voucher and they showed me their computer screen which had a different car grade than my voucher Obviously the receptionist computer screen meant more than my voucher Imagine trying to put luggage a baby car seat a pram and a baby cot all in a Toyota Aygo Then try get your seat far back enough to get comfortable to drive Worst experience of my life To make it worse apparently they only had the exact number of cars available that were due to be rented So I HAD to take that car or leave with none

Wish we had read the reviews before we rented a car from Avis Someone ran into our car and the procedure on the night of the accident was very long 3hours but straight forward The problem was that we were forced to go to the Avis main office the following day The women were rude unhelpful combative and disrespectful They had no intention of offering any assistance Avis shining light was a man named Ryan My advice would be to completely disband that office and fire everyone except Ryan The best advice is to follow what everyone else said go elsewhere

Wish I had read all the critics
First of all please avoid booking a car with Avis Malta When you arrive you will be received by a man who doesn t want to be there and who is especially arrogant to call you bro or to tell you either you pay or you leave I have other customers waiting To put things in context when I made the reservation via the app in Switzerland I never received any confirmation neither for the reservation nor for the confirmation that I took the car nor that I returned the car What already appeared strange to me but I said to myself that there was perhaps a problem with my email address naive When we arrived at the office at about 20 30 and we first had the pleasure to wait during 35-40min to enter the reception We then were warmly welcomed by a Mr who doesn t even say hello to us and who just says drivers license and credit card very nice isn t it Then we were told that we had the choice to pay 37 day for a comprehensive insurance or to block 1800 on the card for the deductible in case of accident In principle I don t like this kind of dilemma because I own a car and my insurance covers damage caused to a rental car so I don t mind having to block a deductible on my card But we are talking about 1800 and yes it is an amount that I consider totally inappropriate knowing that on my reservation it appears among the things included in the reservation a damage cover Theft cover When I told the receptionist that it was the first time I had been charged such an amount having booked several times with Avis he started to get angry and told me that it was either I pay or I get out and that I had to stop acting like a big boy because other customers were waiting Well then on top of this amount that had to be blocked there is 100 for the gasoline which is more or less usual and another 200 for the parking and speeding fines So I wasn t expecting this one Well the best part is that I wanted to cancel the reservation and leave when I saw such a lack of respect but of course I would have had to pay the reservation fees Finally there is a 25 supplement for late arrival from 8pm but don t worry they don t mention it either Regarding the 35-40min wait don t think it s due to the arrival in the evening because the next day around 2pm it was the same situation When there is only one counter open at the Budget reception and nobody at the Avis reception I guess you don t need to be surprised It s a shame to experience such a disappointment with Avis because all my previous reservations in other countries went very well I strongly advise against going through them in Malta and strongly encourage the Avis team to clean up their staff and organization on the Maltese island Conclusion is I will consider booking with alternative agencies instead systematically booking through Avis

Do not rent your car here
They charge me 25 9 euro extra for late pick up after 2000 when it does not written in the booking confirmation And then they deposit me 1100 euroes when it should be 1000 euro deposit When I delivered the car they charge me extra 21 19 euroes for optional services without informing me and what it included It was no service I would not recommend Avis Malta Rental Car Stay away
