Company Overview

Liberty HealthShare: A Community-Based Approach to Healthcare Costs

Liberty HealthShare operates as a healthcare sharing ministry, offering an alternative to traditional health insurance. It is a community of like-minded individuals who agree to share each other's eligible medical expenses based on shared ethical and religious beliefs. The organization provides a framework for members to directly support one another's healthcare needs, fostering a sense of mutual aid and personal responsibility.

How Healthcare Sharing Works

Unlike conventional insurance, Liberty HealthShare is not an insurance company. Members contribute a set monthly amount, known as a "share," which is then used to pay for the eligible medical expenses of other members. The process is designed to be transparent, with members often receiving explanations of how their shares are assisting others in the community. This model emphasizes direct sharing between members, bypassing many of the complexities associated with standard insurance policies.

Core Programs and Membership

The website outlines several distinct sharing programs tailored to different needs and family sizes, such as the Liberty Complete, Liberty Plus, and Liberty Basic plans. Each program has its own guidelines for monthly share amounts, annual unshared amounts (similar to a deductible), and eligible medical expenses. Prospective members typically agree to a statement of beliefs and commit to a healthy lifestyle, which are foundational principles of the community.

Key Features and Member Resources

Liberty HealthShare provides a suite of resources to support its members:

  • Medical Bill Sharing:Members submit eligible medical bills for review and potential sharing by the community.
  • Provider Access:Members have access to a network of preferred providers who offer discounted rates, though they are generally free to choose any healthcare provider.
  • Telehealth Services:Many programs include access to 24/7 telehealth consultations for minor ailments.
  • Health & Wellness Incentives:The ministry often encourages preventive care and healthy living through various programs and resources.
  • Member Advocacy:Support is available to help members navigate the medical billing and sharing process.

Important Considerations for Participants

It is crucial for individuals considering Liberty HealthShare to understand the distinctions from traditional insurance. As a sharing ministry, it is exempt from the Affordable Care Act (ACA) mandates. This means:

  • Members do not receive an ACA Form 1095-A and may be subject to a tax penalty in some states, though a federal exemption exists.
  • Sharing is subject to program guidelines; not all medical expenses are eligible for sharing (e.g., pre-existing conditions may have limitations).
  • The community's continued ability to share expenses depends on the collective financial participation and integrity of its members.

Mission and Community Values

At its heart, Liberty HealthShare is built on principles of faith, stewardship, and personal liberty. The organization emphasizes responsible healthcare consumption, compassionate sharing, and the freedom to make one's own healthcare choices. It appeals to individuals and families seeking a values-aligned, cost-conscious method for managing healthcare expenses outside the conventional insurance system.

In summary, Liberty HealthShare presents a unique, community-oriented model for managing healthcare costs. It requires careful review of its guidelines and a clear understanding of its differences from regulated insurance, but for those who align with its principles, it offers a path to shared medical financial responsibility.

FAQ

Liberty HealthShare is a healthcare sharing ministry, not an insurance company. It is a community of individuals who share eligible medical expenses based on shared ethical and religious beliefs. Unlike traditional insurance, members contribute a monthly 'share' that is used to pay for other members' medical bills. This model emphasizes direct mutual aid and personal responsibility, operating outside the regulations and structures of conventional insurance policies.

Members submit their eligible medical bills to Liberty HealthShare for review. After verification against the program's guidelines, the bill is presented to the community for sharing. The funds from members' monthly shares are then used to pay these eligible expenses. The process is designed to be transparent, and members often receive communications explaining how their contributions assist others.

Stay away

Do not use this company I was a member in good standing with Liberty for 5 years and when I needed them most they completely flaked I had a hysterectomy in Nov 2021 - I went through the approval process Liberty required for the surgery and it was approved by them to continue I was told to pay for the procedure out of pocket which I did and that I would be reimbursed within their usual 90 day window It is now almost 2 years later and I have not received a dime from them nor have any of the medical providers that billed them directly for payments office visits anesthesia etc Now in addition to the money I paid out of pocket I am getting phone calls from the medical providers stating Liberty has called them and told them that they don t have the funds to pay my bills and to let them go to collections - which I am now on the hook for These bills total almost 20K What Liberty is doing is outrageous and unethical and they must be held accountable

I went with their premium program that

I went with their premium program that was to cover 100 after paying 1 500 out of pocket expenses up to 1M They appear to have cash-flow and management issues and after nearly a year now have paid only a very small portion of the expenses related to my heart-related event They make it so user-UNfriendly that anyone who is not tech-savvy most older folks like me will have a near-impossible time navigating the quagmire of their system My credit is completely ruined and it is Liberty HealthShare s fault

They don t pay the bills

We had Liberty Healthshare for many years and we don t really have many health problems I had good experience when I had a hysterectomy and they were quick to pay But then we had ER and hospital visit and two years later they still haven t paid the bill So I am making payments and have paid over a thousand dollars in interest Plus we had about 8 other bills that took them almost 2 years to pay and now I am having to fight to get my money back from the providers because I had already paid the bills And they paid the wrong provider on one of my bills and I am having to spends hours on the phone to get it worked out They are poorly run and obviously can t manage the money I would not recommend using them We switched to Zion Healthshare and they have been phenomenal

Liberty HealthShare offers several programs tailored to different needs, such as Liberty Complete, Liberty Plus, and Liberty Basic. Each program has specific guidelines determining the monthly share amount, the annual unshared amount (functioning similarly to a deductible), and the scope of eligible medical expenses. These options allow individuals and families to select a plan that aligns with their healthcare needs and budget.

Yes, members are generally free to choose any licensed healthcare provider. However, Liberty HealthShare provides access to a network of preferred providers who have agreed to offer discounted rates. Using these providers can help reduce out-of-pocket costs and streamline the billing process, but it is not a requirement for receiving assistance with eligible expenses.

Prospective members are typically required to agree to a statement of shared beliefs that reflects the community's ethical and religious foundations. A commitment to a healthy lifestyle is also a common principle. Membership is contingent on agreeing to these values and adhering to the program's guidelines for sharing medical expenses.

Coverage for pre-existing conditions is subject to the specific guidelines of each sharing program. There may be waiting periods or limitations on sharing for medical expenses related to pre-existing conditions. It is essential to review the program details carefully or consult with Liberty HealthShare directly to understand the specific provisions that apply.

As a recognized healthcare sharing ministry, Liberty HealthShare is exempt from the mandates of the Affordable Care Act. This means members do not receive an ACA Form 1095-A. While a federal exemption exists, members may be subject to a tax penalty in some states. It is advisable for individuals to consult with a tax professional to understand their specific obligations.

Liberty HealthShare provides several resources, including member advocacy to help navigate billing and sharing, access to 24/7 telehealth services for minor issues in many programs, and health and wellness incentives to encourage preventive care. The organization aims to support members throughout their healthcare journey within the sharing community.

The community is built on principles of faith, stewardship, personal liberty, and mutual aid. It emphasizes responsible healthcare consumption, compassionate sharing of burdens, and the freedom for individuals to make their own healthcare choices. These values form the foundation for the collective financial and social support system.

It is crucial to understand that Liberty HealthShare is not insurance and does not guarantee payment of claims. Eligibility for sharing is based on program guidelines and the community's continued financial participation. Prospective members should carefully review all program materials, understand the limitations on eligible expenses, and ensure their alignment with the community's statement of beliefs before joining.
