Over and above the call of duty
We travelled on the 11 02 train from Hazel Grove to Blackpool on Friday 5th August We were in a seat near to the toilet as I have MS so needed to be near to it At some point close to Manchester a young man tattooed face not that I am biased got on with a small suitcase on wheels He sat in a seat that clearly said please leave this seat empty for pregnant disabled or older individuals that need it At the next station an older man was helped on the train with his tripod scooter he was very frail and needed lots of support The guard on the train asked the young man to please move to another seat as his was needed The younger man refused to move the guard - Sheena was her name asked him twice more he eventually moved but under protest Further on in the journey the older man needed to use the toilet - Sheena took him to the toilet and ensured he locked the door approx 20 mins later Sheena noticed that he had not come back from the toilet and knocked on the door to ensure he was ok - she then walked him back to his seat During this time Sheena was opening and closing the train doors at stations and making sure all the passengers were safe Sheena did an amazing job and worked over and above her job role - she deserves praise for this

Excellent Service
On Friday 28 April 2023 my sister and I took the 17 01 train from Manchester Airport to Crewe During this journey there was a slight delay The guard Haj don t know how to spell her name explained the reason for the delay and a rough estimation of the time of arrival in Crewe As we were leaving the train before Crewe and had no other connections to make I didn t really take much notice of what was said although this information may well have been very useful to others on the journey When she came to check our tickets she asked if we heard her announcement and asked if the delay would impair our journey in any way When we explained that we would leave the train before Crewe she said that we must let her know if we needed help with our suitcases and that she would be happy to help When we reached our station she immediately stopped her ticket inspecting and took our suitcases and backpacks from us and placed them on the platform All this was done with good grace This level of service is not unusual on Northern Rail Before Covid 19 struck I travelled more frequently and I would say that on eight out of ten journeys the guard has had to impart information deal with confused difficult passengers or help in a physical way It s all too easy to complain about cancellations and delays but this is not the fault of the staff KEEP THE GUARD ON THE TRAIN

Northern are doing their best
Northern are doing their best to recover services to the level users expect There are always situations outside their control as with all service providers that perhaps encourage users to be more critical than they normally would be A points failure or a broken down train has serious consequences not just in the area in which it occurs possibly over a much wider radius because most train journeys intersect around large conurbations like Manchester Preston Warrington Lancaster Blackburn etc and trains cross one another s paths Its always best to get all the facts before putting finger to phone or tablet to make a review Negative comments encourage more negative comments if they are written without giving serious thought to their long term effect

Credit where credit is due We went to Brid from Howden on Tuesday The train was on time both ways with friendly conductors but apart from that we left a bag on the train when we got off at Brid and didn t realise until well after it had set off back We went to the station when we realised and the bag was in the ticket office Top marks

On the 8 08 Preston to Manchester 24 08 Well done to Shannon I think her name was who helped a young man He was in some distress and her sympathetic caring and gentle manner clearly settled him She even went away and came back with his journey all written out and explained it to him It was so lovely to see staff taking proper care of customers in this way Well done
