Average

You can learn a lot using Oxford Home Schooling resources but you have to do everything yourself they don t offer a lot of support It also depends on which tutor you get some of the tutors are excellent while others are not as proficient If you are accustomed to studying by yourself then you would fare quite well with Oxford Home Schooling otherwise it could be unprofitable for you

Good materials lack of tutor input

My children were able to follow the course materials and submit TMAs without asking for much guidance or help from the tutors As a result I feel they didn t get very much from the tutors who were largely reactive rather than proactive I feel I paid quite a lot effectively for the materials and TMA marking

Most of the staff were excellent

Most of the staff were excellent professional and very helpful However some of the tutors were lacking there is no face-to-face or video contact so this should mean that the tutor s ability to teach through only phone calls and emails should be exceptional but this wasn t the case In regards to maths and science which need more tutorials and a visual explanation the learning aids that Oxford offers are seriously lacking and therefore did affect my daughter s final grade I overall would not recommend this service however I do appreciate the English tutor that we had Dawn was excellent

The level of support provided was not

The level of support provided was not consistent across tutors I also felt that were not equally passionate and committed to provide guidance to my child

Thank God for home education

Thank God for home education as without that option we would have been in real trouble The institution itself was very helpful and mostly so were the tutors but some of the materials seemed in need of a re-write I got the impression they were compiled some years ago and do not seem up to date in terms of social awareness and current issues plus the coursework did not always cover the ground needed for assignment questions However Oxford were fantastic at keeping us informed throughout the pandemic of how things would be dealt with and as a registered exam centre were able to provide grades in lieu of exams whereas many home schooling providers were not and this was a huge advantage We are very grateful to them- if the course materials could have a revamp the star rating would be higher

Psychology and Sociology GCSE

My daughter studied for her psychology and sociology GCSEs with Oxford Her psychology tutor was amazing dedicated and reliable whereas her sociology tutor though nice did the bare minimum and was very little help through the course The materials were adequate but could have been made more interesting and interactive It is simply a case of working through a black and white folder there is no online element to break up the course The sociology folder was confusing even for me while psychology was logical In the end my daughter s marks reflected this with her psychology mark being higher than sociology

Oxford Home Schooling is effective if

Oxford Home Schooling is effective if your child is self motivated and well organised The work requirements are clear and work is marked regularly My child gained a Grade C at A Level which I consider a fair grade as their 4th A Level Where I would say the system is weak is that I didn t always feel there was a lot of actual teaching Children are set work do the work get a mark with some limited feedback and move on to the next task They have to teach themselves the curriculum Their tutor is in contact regularly but is simply checking the work already done If a student doesnt understand something or get stuck my impression was that there s not a lot of help available I would also flag that some language teachers are not native speakers however I don t think that impacted my childs final grade To sum up Oxford Home Schooling achieved what my daughter needed at a price I could afford but particularly for Modern Language qualifications I would recommend supplementary tuition to support spoken language skills and offer extra support I would also advise Modern Language candidates to check in advance which books media the tutor will be covering Most exam boards offer a choice of foreign language books and films for the A level curriculum however Oxford Home Schooling only offered to cover 2 books of their choice probably because it is easier to teach 2 books via online learning rather than a book and a film For my child the second book was fairly heavy and I knew they would find the film an easier option We opted to have a private tutor to cover the film option rather than OHS s choice for the second book but this was an added expense I would add that the tutor communicated well and the back-office administration team always seemed well organised and easy to talk to

Good experience with IGCSE

My son completed 2 IGCSE with OHS The courses are very thorough and the tutor support is valuable as a marker of where the student is grade wise I will be coming back to OHS for key stage 3 for my other child Yes I would recommend
