Stolen Art and Bogus Verification Standards

Let me start off by saying I really wanted to like Opensea When signing up in April 2021 I was super excited about the prospect of selling NFTs as a way to disrupt the status quo by shining more of a spotlight on struggling artists This as opposed to conventional art galleries where one often has to pay to play or schmooze with the elites just to gain a little bit of exposure I had hoped Opensea would embrace democratization of art while promoting and protecting the creators on its platform Turns out I was severely disappointed after being there over a year with zero sales One might wonder at this point if my photos are good enough to sell and that s a perfectly valid point Art is of course subjective and the last thing I want to do is glorify mine I also realize there is a whole lot of competition with NFTs and that s fine I have however noticed my images being stolen and marketed as NFTs on Opensea Several times I have had to issue takedown notices thanks to DeviantArt Protect which alerts me to potential violations of my intellectual property Incidentally I ve been a member of DeviantArt for 16 years with 2900 submitted images 14800 watchers and 1 3 million page views username boldfrontiers for verification purposes just like on Opensea for that matter Might sound like I m digressing with these stats and again I do not intend to inflate my ego I just want to demonstrate that I have been active as an artist for a while long enough to see my photos getting ripped off and posted elsewhere God knows how many times without my permission To the credit of Opensea they have removed the offending images every time I issued a takedown notice That s one plus I guess and in all fairness the reason why I am awarding two stars instead of one They do the bare minimum in adhering to DMCA standards when an artist complains about copyright infringement But that s as far as it goes at least in my experience Once when I issued a takedown notice I asked if I could be verified in the process Figuring I had done enough to prove verification by the very act of compelling Opensea to remove my stolen images and providing them with ample sources in the process Something they implicitly acknowledged after said images were removed yet I was met with total silence after asking to be verified In other words it seems Opensea awards verification status almost exclusively to successful artists who have already made a lot of money selling NFTs In turn feeding into this vicious cycle of continuing to reward those who made it to the top while continuing to ignore the struggling artists toiling in the shadows That said I have no problem with Opensea awarding separate badges for artists on their platform with a high track record of sales My core complaint is with the verification system as any artist able to certify ownership of their own images should be allowed the benefit of a verified creator If not then I fear many struggling artists will continue to get rolled over despite their best efforts to prove authenticity of their own images To me that betrays the spirit of NFTs and blockchain technology as Opensea apparently reverts to the old formula of curated art galleries pandering to the elites

Just steal content and sell it as your own

A website where anyone can steal the art from someone else and then sell it as his own This is just outrageous I know that this is the users fault but instead of doing the same as Facebook s it s not the website fault for the user content they should compensate the original artist with money taken from the stealer Just add a monetary guarantee to create an account on opensea

OpenSea Improvement Points

The website definitely have a lot of bugs and needs improvements to make it more user friendly for anyone who is not very familiar with crypto world Comparing how easy it is to buy NFTs at NBA Top Shot OpenSea has a very long way to go Overall if you do not know how to switch between networks in MetaMask it s better to avoid OpenSea until you learn more about blockchains Verification of NFTs is another process that require a lot of work OpenSea allows a lot of NFTs with copyright issues to be listed and sold When they discover the copyright issue OpenSea delist these items but bear no responsibility towards anyone who bought NFT on the marketplace I believe OpenSea needs to create a trustworthy escrow system to provide the mid class buyers protection they need against fraud and legal issues

OpenSea Screws the uploading creator with ridiculous recaptcha

When the community rejected their 50 image limit on collections opensea responded like an abusive spouse and forced recaptcha for each image upload Instead of having a tiered system ie no captcha with KYC and a pattern of honesty they treat everyone like a potential criminal if your uploading vs creating a drop There are times users have to spend more time doing recaptchas than uploading They get buyers but their lack of empathy and fairness for the honest creator is disturbing I can only hope in purgatory the antisocial c suite creeps who thought this was fair have spend a few thousand years solving recaptchas or at least equal the time they forced users to waste

About Opensea

OpenSea: The Premier NFT Marketplace

OpenSea is the world's first and largest web3 marketplace for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and digital collectibles. Functioning as a decentralized peer-to-peer platform, it enables users to discover, buy, sell, and create a vast array of unique digital items. The platform has established itself as a foundational pillar of the NFT ecosystem, providing accessible tools for both seasoned crypto enthusiasts and newcomers to the space.

Core Functionality and Offerings

At its heart, OpenSea is a comprehensive platform for NFT transactions. Users can browse an extensive catalog spanning multiple categories, including:

  • Digital Art:Unique artworks from established and emerging artists.
  • Collectibles:Profile picture projects (PFPs), trading cards, and virtual goods.
  • Domain Names:Decentralized web3 domain names like .eth.
  • Virtual Worlds:Land parcels, wearables, and items for metaverse platforms.
  • Utility NFTs:Tokens that grant access, membership, or other real-world benefits.

The marketplace supports NFTs across multiple blockchains, primarily Ethereum, Polygon, Solana, and others, offering users flexibility in transaction fees and speed.

Key Features for Users and Creators

OpenSea provides a suite of tools designed to empower its community. For collectors and traders, the platform offers advanced filtering, rarity tracking, price history charts, and a secure wallet-based login system. The buying and selling process is streamlined, supporting fixed-price listings, timed auctions, and bundle purchases.

For creators and artists, OpenSea offers a relatively frictionless minting process. The platform's "lazy minting" feature is particularly notable, allowing creators to list NFTs without paying upfront blockchain gas fees; the fee is only paid upon the item's first sale. This significantly lowers the barrier to entry for new creators. Additionally, creators can earn ongoing royalties on secondary sales, a revolutionary feature for digital artists.

Security and User Experience

OpenSea operates as a non-custodial marketplace. This means users retain full control of their assets through their own cryptocurrency wallets (like MetaMask or Coinbase Wallet); OpenSea never holds users' NFTs or funds. While this enhances security by reducing central points of failure, it also places the responsibility for wallet security squarely on the user. The platform includes safety features such as verification badges for notable collections and a reporting system for suspicious activity.

The OpenSea Ecosystem

Beyond simple transactions, OpenSea fosters a broader ecosystem. It features a robust ranking system for collections, trending pages, and educational resources to help users navigate web3. The platform's API also allows developers to build applications on top of its data, further extending its utility and integration across the digital landscape.

In summary, OpenSea serves as the primary gateway for millions to interact with the NFT economy. By combining a massive inventory, user-friendly tools for creation and collection, and a multi-chain approach, it continues to play a central role in defining how digital ownership and community are built on the blockchain.
