Renting a car in Portugal is the most frustrating travel experience

Renting a car in Portugal is the most difficult travel planning task I have encoutered in a long time The issue is figuring out how to thread the needle of when and where various car rental agencies would be open Plus the ever present surcharges and one-way drop fees Wow I wanted to rent and return a car at Porto Campanha train station Impossible Then I discovered by trial and error I had to turn it in at the airport As I was about to rent the car the ever-present ONE-WAY surcharge applied even though it s the same city and the other options are closed Frustrating The only way to know this information is by testing different rental plans

Didn t receive confirmation

When I made the payment I was told there were 3 items of my reservation to be checked I didn t receive any confirmation Why has this happened I looked into my website account and I see it is confirmed and the payment was authorised by my credit card April 11 23 37 received opinion request April 12 08 00 aprox sent my opinionApril 12 08 59 received booking confirmation OK

I liked the website

I liked the website To book the car was easy I received the confirmation very quickly However later I received another confirmation from HERTZ The car that I booked from AutoEurope was a Mercedes C Class but Hertz confirmed a DS DS7 Are there a way to change it to Mercedes C Class

Fighting for the right car

Initially the rental company insisted to give us a car of lower category claiming that there was not a car available in the category we have booked After our complaints they decided to give us a car o higher category Then they charged us with an amount of 16 euros in excess of cross border charge which by the way was not clear by the time of booking However taking and dropping off the car was quite an easy procedure

AutoEurope Enterprise car rental in Durres Albania

We rented a car from Enterprise in Durres Albania via AutoEurope A few problems - The address provided by Autoeurope was wrong We have been told that the car rental company had moved 6 months earlier to the ferry terminal which is better - No one was present at the Enterprise car rental booth despite our reservation We had to find someone - Only CREDIT card are accepted not debit which are much more common this a common trick from rental car companies to have you pay for the full insurance - Parking lot directions for car drop-off in Durres Port are non existant One the other hand - we had a better car than exoected from Enterprise but it took us 2 hours to get it- The Enterprise employee level of english was good

Good rate but unclear size of the car

Good rate but the car categories on the site do not match with those of the rental company actually smaller Called the hotline right away but no solution came up so far

confusing contract wording

In the contract it says Rental excludes Road Safety Fee Approximately EUR 3 08 per day maximum EUR 43 05 VAT included paid locallyCan you please explain what does that mean Is this breakdown cover assistance or something else

I booked a car with Europcar through

I booked a car with Europcar through Auto Europe with unlimited kilometres On spurious grounds Europcar refused to give me the car I rebooked the next day in a different Europcar agency without unlimited kilometres and had no problem Auto-Europe tried to help but fundamentally they were not able to find me a booking at the same price with the same kilometres - although contractually I believe they would have been obliged to procure me with a car

There were offers presented e g from Drivalia These were fake offers No option to rent in Barcelona and to return in Malaga was available

The process was easy and smooth

The process was easy and smooth but on your site it was stated that if dropping off the car after hours there is a drop box to leave the keys When I reserved the car and got the voucher I noticed a 61 euro will be added More honest and transparent information would be appreciated
