AI Review Summary Based on 69 reviews

Overall customer experience with Co-operativeinsurance is sharply divided, with many praising efficient claim handling and helpful staff while others report severe issues with pricing and administration. Positive reviews frequently highlight excellent and efficient service during claims processes, with customers reporting quick payouts and supportive advisors. Many long-term customers express satisfaction with the handling of home, contents, and car insurance claims over many years. However, a significant portion of reviews are extremely negative, focusing on steep and unexplained renewal price hikes, particularly for home and car insurance. Numerous complaints cite poor communication, including unannounced policy cancellations and difficulties contacting the company by phone. The Young Drivers black box insurance product receives specific criticism for alleged inaccurate data and punitive behavior. Issues with outsourced services, like repairs and home rescue, are also noted as problematic. Cancellation processes are described as difficult, with reports of continued charges after cancellation and high cancellation fees. Despite the positives, the company's renewal pricing strategy and administrative failures appear to be major drivers of dissatisfaction and customer loss.

bad not to be confused with other co-op companies which are good where this one s bad

I ve been with CIS Co-operative Insurance Society recently rebranded as Co-op Insurance for 20 years but only because they re the only company that ll insure a house with gas fires instead of central heating To cut 5 long stories very short 1 I used to let 3 rooms although I insured with them because they agreed that that was OK they repeatedly refused to put it in writing at all so I had to record a conversation of their staff member saying that they were including it in the agreement - ridiculous way to carry on a business 2 they ordered minor damage to my home to cover up evidence of a potential claim ordered cornice removed which was only thing showing where heavy rain cause crack to widen after I got the damage fixed at my own expense it took me 2 years to get them to put right the damage they d ordered 3 I used to let 3 rooms but reduced it to 2 - I d had a policy that d allowed me to let 3 but changed it to a cheaper one that allows only 2 - then when I wanted to change it back they said they no longer do such policies - they could ve told me that before I changed - not remotely happy 4 my new policy says on my bank statements direct debits F A Insurance so I pointed out to CIS that it s not just a Fire Accident policy - they just said that s not what F A means but wouldn t say what it does mean - I feel they can t even lie properly 5 I recently found that CIS should ve offered me Co-op membership points so I asked Co-op membership how to get them they told me that CIS has to give me them so I asked CIS for them but they just referred me back to Co-op memberships totally doging their responsibility in this matter - one d think I was asking for a claim not just for points cos their reply treated me as though it were from a Loss Adjuster claim refuser I have paper proof of all of 2-5 but obviously not of 1 UPDATE JULY 2015 I ve 33 years no-claims bonus but my insurance is 35 higher than an online quote from same company to a newbie with none CIS puts up its insurance each year LOTS so the only way to get competitive insurance from them is to cancel yearly get a new policy yearly - such an unnecessary faff Insurance Ombudsman don t like this tactic as it s designed to make people pay over the odds if they forget to do this yearly Then of course if one needed to claim CIS could easily say that the problem was before the current policy started despite the fact that they were also the previous insurers Totally had enough of them am changing to AGE UK Insurance - wish I d done so 5 years ago I m 55 they do ins for over-50s

Insurance and Service good HUGE cancellation fees

No complaints on the insurance or service but be aware that the Co Op charge a 50 cancellation fee Many other insurers are free to cancel

Poor Outsourcing of Services

No hot water on 11 12 16 Called co op insurance and was directed to Home Rescue Plus who referred us to Gas Ancillary Services who was supposed to call between 2 - 4 hours later to confirm an appointment No one called Next day had to contact home rescue plus again and finally gas ancillary services sent James not the most genial or accommodating sort of guy No matter as long as he can do the job My concern is that I was not told that we had to pay for their parking or fine if they get one On his first visit my husband had to watch his van but on his second my husband objected as it was cold James then threatened to walk away without doing the repair and leave us without essential hot water I find that really mean and unkind Another unpleasant experience was that Gas Ancillary Services demanded money upfront or nothing gets done I don t know how much control co operative insurance has on their outsourcing services but all in the experience left a bitter taste in my mouth Having no hot water is bad enough but being treated in such a disagreeable way made things much worse I will not be renewing my policy with co operative insurance

If it s car insurance you want look elsewhere

If you have an accident and need a courtesy car this company will want to know a mass of detail regarding the vehicle you are borrowing almost right down to the make of tyres I kid you not Bothersome ain t the word for it Oh and if you need a courtesy car for a vehicle re-call so not my fault and I live 15 miles from my nearest Nissan dealer they won t cover you AT ALL They regard a re-call as a service and they don t cover that Oh and if you change your address online then you ll pay them 15 even though you do it all yourself and don t take up any of their labour time Oh yes by the way their robot answering system will ask your policy number name and date of birth THEN a human being comes on the line and guess what He she then asks again for your policy number name and date of birth Needless to say this is an out-sourced set-up Even if they offer a cheaper policy really don t bother Like me you will be putting the phone down on them out of sheer unhelpful frustration I was a one time Co-op supporter Now they are the last place I would go for insurance and I won t be renewing with the Co-op ever again

Have been with Co op insurance for

Have been with Co op insurance for building and contents since becoming a u k homeowner in 1973 This year is the last having never made a claim on any insurance They give a number for renewals on this number you are subjected to various voices for app 20mins for me this is 40p per minute including a charity where the CEO is in receipt of in excess of 1 000 000 per annum salary Then it is a sales pitch to increase cover When this failed I am told my debit card was refused so further time wasted and of course the card was o k I challenged the person that co op receive payment from the phone company on calls unable or unwilling to give an answer AVOID THE CO OPERATIVE FOR BUILDING AND CONTENTS INSURANCE it would appear they have jumped on the scammers wagon

missed payment fine scam

If you miss a DD payment they will not retry a few days later like a reasonable company They will make you call them and pay a 12-odd fine

Annoying Customer Experience

Fortunately I have not had to make a claim as yet but even making changes to your documentation is a very frustrating experience You are encouraged to do this on line you enter your new details put your payment details in - there is always a charge - and then the website says it is undergoing maintenance and you have to ring them anyway Very very annoying And seems to be standard practice as it has done this to me twice now

Co-op Young Driver Insurance

Before I say anything I would like to state this is for the Co-op Young Driver Insurance section of Co-op Insurance I can t really fault the customer service they pick up pretty quick and get stuff sorted in a decent amount of time However before you purchase this policy think about where you live and if you need to use any more than 50 throttle at any time I live near an A road with short slip roads and 70mph traffic this requires me to not drive at 5mph 24 7 This according to the cretinous box in my car is wrong and means my policy went up by 260 for the remaining 6 months because of something I simply cannot f change The box scoring system dashboard is horrific Want to corner at more than 10 mph nope Want to get to 70mph in under 60 seconds nope Want to drive at 11 01pm nope You get the idea I raised a formal complaint and was told the box is fine and I should ve considered where I live first It was my first ever insurance policy as it is for most young drivers how the f was I meant to know this is for people who live on farms Will not be renewing

Poor communications

Was keen to support the Co-op good ethical policy but unfortunately my experience hasn t been great Submitted a claim on 16th Nov 2018 heard nothing back from them Finally chased it up on 16th Jan 2019 was told that claim hadn t even been passed to claim handlers at that point not impressed That said and in fairness once the claim was sent to handlers tagged urgent on 17th Jan I got a resolution within 5 working days In summary might still use again but would make sure I chased up any claims submitted

Ridiculous price for a good customer

Been with Coop car insurance for two years now I won t be with them a third year as the prices are ridiculous No claims or convictions No payment problems So they put the price up by a big amount No sense whatsoever I m going elsewhere I ll be paying approximately half the price for the exact same cover I think these companies just assume people won t check round as it s a hassle Well I ve checked dozens of other car insurance companies and before making my decision I ve also checked the reviews
