Mdates lets you register and browse profiles completely free, which is how I started, and I did have a few genuine conversations over a month of light use. The catch arrives quickly: replying beyond initial messages requires a paid plan, and the upgrade prompts are persistent. Profiles seemed mostly real in my area unlike some apps. Decent middle-tier option if you accept that meaningful contact means subscribing.
