Plex is a mega solution It is not perfect but it is really very good I have a lifetime membership not that I use too many of the subscription features but I am happy to financially contribute to keep the project going If you like the software I urge you to consider how you can contribute Now all the gushy praise is out the way onto the feature enhancements I would like to see Handling of multiple versions is weak Optimized versions are ok but if you need to rebuild your library index you end up with multiple versions taking up space It would be good to see a report showing all versions of all content and then be able to perform bulk actions such as deleting everything with a low bitrate or everything that is over a certain size or whatever I am wasting disk space on multiple versions of stuff and there is no easy way I can find of sorting that out other than trawling through by hand - life is too short for that PVR functionality in Roku would be grand I expect this is already in the works but it is needed as Roku is a great and cheap client solution Ok whining over keep up the great work

Sadly far too many of the 1 reviews are from people who aren t good with computers who want everything to work perfectly out of the box without any additional effort with underpowered hardware or just unrealistic expectations The fact is if you have your own content be that music copies of your own DVDs home videos photos audio books or whatever that you d like to access around your house on multiple devices or with friends and family there s nothing better than Plex This will involve installing the server on decent hardware and the better the hardware the more rewarding your experience will be If you re trying to stream over a poor connection or trying to transcode videos in real time using a cheap NAS you ll get what you paid for Once it s probably set up it s a joy You can drop new content into a folder have Plex monitor that folder for changes immediately or to a schedule of your choice and it will automatically gather the thumbnail summary rating extras etc If you just want to stream movies and leave the admin to someone else stick to Netflix
