As someone who has been an AOL customer since the 1980s, my recent experience with AOL MyPrivacy has been deeply frustrating and disheartening. After clearing my laptop to remove persistent pop-ups, I discovered that I had unintentionally deleted my saved AOL login information. Unfortunately, the recovery process exposed serious flaws in AOL’s customer support system and outdated security protocols.

Like many others, the phone number tied to my account is decades old, making the 2-step verification process nearly impossible to complete. Despite making multiple calls to AOL customer service, I encountered vague responses, empty promises of system resets, and no clear path to regain access to my account. Even worse, I was informed I’d still be billed for the period I was locked out—despite not being able to use any services.

The lack of accountability, the inability to escalate to a supervisor, and the failure to follow through with promised callbacks raise serious concerns about AOL’s commitment to customer care and data accessibility. For anyone relying on their AOL email account for business, medical, or financial correspondence, this situation poses a serious risk.

Sadly, AOL seems to embody what some are now calling “enshittification”—where once-reliable services deteriorate while costs rise. If you’re considering AOL MyPrivacy, or reviewing AOL as a service provider, I strongly recommend reading multiple AOL reviews and proceeding with caution.
