I recently had the absolute pleasure of training with Jolly Parrot Sailing and I cannot recommend them highly enough Their commitment to excellence and dedication and to their students success is truly rare in this worldUnder the guidance of amazing instructors Ian Greg Jason and Alistair I ve become a skilled confident and happy yachtmaster offshore From the outset the owners Clive Rachel and their team of instructors demonstrated a wealth of knowledge and expertise in sailing which they effortlessly imparted to their students Despite the challenging nature of the Yachtmaster Offshore exam their structured and thorough approach to teaching ensured that I was well-prepared for every aspect of the test What sets Jolly Parrot apart is not only their mastery of sailing but also their genuine passion for people teaching They fostered a supportive and encouraging learning environment which allowed me to build confidence and proficiency in my skills Throughout the course Ian Greg Jason and Alistair provided personalized guidance and feedback addressing any weaknesses and refining my techniques until I felt fully prepared for the exam and a future career in sailing Their patience and dedication were instrumental in helping me achieve success Thanks to Clive Rachel and the exceptional team at Jolly Parrot Sailing School I not only passed my Yachtmaster Offshore exam but also gained a deep understanding and appreciation for the art of sailing For anyone looking to pursue their sailing dreams Jolly Parrot is undoubtedly the premier choice

Novice to day skipper

Novice to day skipper is a tall ask You can gain this qualification with Jolly Parrot if you put the work in and want it enough If you want to be able to confidently charter a yacht and be responsible for those aboard it ll take a little extra effort above this but I can t imagine a better grounding with the time allotted Jolly Parrot give you and excellent base and their highly skilled staff are more than capable of guiding you through the hoops but it s a lot to internalise and ultimately it ll come down to your passion for the subject whether you feel confident enough to take it further This is not a luxury yachting holiday it s an in-depth and functional course to get you onto the first step of a very tall ladder For the comp crew I had Alister who s knowledge and passion for sailing is infectious We went through the ropes thoroughly and encountered some unexpected challenges that he dealt with professionally including us students in the process which I really valued as it was way beyond what you d get from a textbook For our day-skipper we had Tom I really connected with the way Tom taught He is methodical descriptive and thorough He explained the reasons behind each decision and manoeuvre we made and took care to ensure we understood what was happening on an individual level which made all the difference because it s easy to get left behind in such a fast paced and changing environment His knowledge of sailing is truly way above anything you ll need on this course The balance of learning life experience and fun holiday was just right for me and I d recommend this ace bunch of highly skilled individuals to anyone that s willing to take on a challenge and gain some life skills

Completing a sailing course with Jolly Parrot especially Instructor Jason and Yacht Master Trainee Dave was an absolute pleasure Their brilliant instruction patience flexibility and fun-loving attitude made the experience truly exceptional Jason s expertise and Dave s support created a dynamic learning environment that fostered confidence and skill development I highly recommend their course to anyone looking to learn to sail or improve their skills on the water

The most amazing week in Gibraltar

I just completed my Day Skipper course with Jolly Parrot Sailing and had the most amazing time out on the water I m so happy I made the decision to join Jolly Parrot instead of training locally The weather and scenery in Gibraltar are spectacular which provides a stark contrast to the doom-and-gloom of the UK this time of year The skippers at Jolly Parrot are all kind talented and they truly made you feel like part of the family while you re there My skipper Ian showed us through the boat when we arrived and it wasn t too long before we were out on the water Each day was an adventure with Ian demonstrating all the skills needed man overboard docking maneuvers etc and getting us to perform our own tide calculations pilotage charts and passage planning Out of all this Ian explained the most important lesson was to make sure you always put the kettle on before you got back to port The week flew by and through all the training and exercises we were awarded with our RYA Day Skipper certificates Big thanks to Alex and the Canadia guys Celia Joule for making the week onboard so amazing I spent a lot of time sailing when I was younger and as I m looking to take my Yachtmaster next Ian took the time to give me suggestions on the best ways to accomplish this I also want to give a shoutout to Rachel and Clive for all the questions they answered via email before I arrived Other schools either didn t bother answering my questions or didn t explain the process thoroughly enough You can tell a lot about a company through their thoughtful communication and website and I want to commend them for it I will definitely be returning to Jolly Parrot as soon as I can

This place is just amazing

This place is just amazing I just finished a novice to day skipper course and I couldn t recommend it enough The tuition is fantastic I was initially nervous about whether or not I d pass but the whole thing is organised brilliantly to set you up for success My introduction to sailing was with Ian who was fantastic calm knowledgeable and great fun - I had a brilliant time and couldn t have asked for a better intro The classroom theory was very intense but our wonderful teacher Phillipa had a gift for making things clear I was so glad she took the theory class I couldn t have got through it without her By the time it came to the practical I already felt pretty confident so it was a dream to be under the instruction of Greg His passion for sailing is infectious be warned - sailing with Greg you ll understand why people get bitten by the bug and leave everything behind for a life on the waves I nearly cancelled my flight home He s knows his stuff and he explains it really well He s super supportive and takes care to work through any areas you re struggling with so that you leave feeling prepared to take on sailing solo As if that wasn t enough he s so much fun and absolutely hilarious Clive and Rachel clearly know how to match groups I spent all week laughing so much my sides hurt It was genuinely better than I ever hoped Also rest assured that if anything isn t right JP do whatever they can to fix it I had a bit of a personality clash with someone which could have put a downer on things but they were 100 supportive throughout and made little changes that resolved the issue completely Thanks Jolly Parrot you re ace I ll definitely be back Also there s dolphins and sunfish

Fast Track Day Skipper training in Gibraltar

I have just completed the Fast Track Day Skipper course with Jolly Parrot based in Gibraltar this was a nine day course during which we stayed on the boat The first four days where classroom based theory with Josh as our very knowledge instructor lots of information to absorb in quite a short time period but somehow he managed to get it to sink in there is a couple of written tests on the last day After the theory it was straight into a five day practical phase with Alistair our new instructor where we sailed to La Linea a neighbouring Spanish Marina and across the Gibraltar Straights to Ceuta on the African Continent We had a bit of a glitch with our boat so missed a days sailing however Alistair manged to keep up the intensity and get both the trainee Day Skippers enough hands and minds on experience There where 10 people doing the Theory Course five of us where on our boat with two doing day skipper and three doing Competent Crew training The three competent crew stayed as Stu I left to complete there Day Skipper in the following days The weather and locations were wonderful the instructors great at what they do and at the end of the course I fell that I could take a boat out as the Skipper not sure how all the other sailors think about that though I would easily recommend Jolly Parrot for training it wasnt erfect but what ever is Bob

Bloody Brilliant

I ve just come back from 2 weeks with Clive and his gang of very happy and experienced skippers I have to say it s best thing I ve done for a long time Gibraltar is a smashing place to try out lots and lots of different sailing conditions and a few times we found ourselves in new challenging situations However that s all part of sailing and dealing with stuff is just part of the job when you take accountability for a boat and your crew Gibraltar gives you hefty tides and currents lots of big ships and I mean lots fishing boats dealing with UK and Med mooring systems and loads more The sun shines most of the time but we also had F6 - F7 winds but with relatively flat seas All great experience I ve come back knackered as the courses they run are hard the skippers expect a high standard if you want the RYA qualifications At the same time they make sure that everyone gets it experience and ability are all taken into account and at all time everyone is safe I have read the one other review on this site and I simply do not recognise the previous comments made I know all the people I sailed with over the two weeks would say the same thing I loved it and I ve made some good friends at the same time Richard
