I m now 68 and because of clever
I m now 68 and because of clever foresight and planning managed to retire on an occupational pension 12 years ago I m now 2 yrs into my state pension and my wife 1 Yr younger is in a similar position Between 1980-95 I served as a police officer haveing experienced several traumas during my service from around 1993 - I developed serious clinical depression at once stage signed off work by a hospital psychiatric surgeon for 1 Yr on returning to work my employers immediately re-newed the Disciplinary action for basically slack attention to duty tho there were no serious consequences of my inaction Enough was enough and I took the opportunity to resignretaining all my pension privileges The financial consequences were huge we lost our mortgaged home back to expensive wasteful renting as young teenagers our children were desolate As bankrupts anything earned above subsistence had to go to the receiver so I ymtook the opportunity to go to university under the mature student scheme one of the last beneficiaries of the state grant - my studies in developmental psychology Industrial socialology gave me opportunities in staff recruitment training where I was then happily employed until retirement we managed to get back on the mortgage ladder and now mortgage free have a happy retirement - in an attempt to payback I joined the samaritans who I eventually left after finding them the must unhelpful group of so called advisors I have ever experienced They actually teach you to respect that suicide is a human decision no-one has the right to be disuaded from but a volunteer has to be simply there to be spoken to even if it transpires they are the last person the subject will speak to Chad Varah mist have been one twisted individual

View from an ex listening volunteer
I read some of these reviews with a very heavy heart but feel I have to respond from the Samaritan point of view I can only however speak from the knowledge I have of my own Branch I was a listening volunteer for 17 years and have to say the training I received was exemplary Ongoing training is mandatory for all volunteers and covers a multitude of relevant topics But Samaritans are not counsellors The organisation I agree has changed considerably over the years but the premise remains the same To offer a 24 7 helpline for those in emotional distress Samaritans are not there to discuss politics illegal immigrants or the State of the Nation Nor are they there to be verbally abused or to be used as sex-line Volunteers offer their services free and freely Many work full time and then go on to do a 6hr night duty I do realise not every caller will receive the best of attention or what they are hoping for be it on the phone chat or email But the caller always has the right to end the call and call again maybe gelling better with the next volunteer who answers the phone As for long wait times it should be remembered that although endeavouring to always be available Samaritans don t have infinite resources in the way of volunteers especially at unsociable times of day I hope this review had helped set some issues straight Thank you
